FIESTA DE SAN MATÍAS, APÓSTOL

MOTIVACIÓN

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de San Matías apóstol, el que fue designado de entre los seguidores de Jesús para completar -en el grupo de los Doce- el vacío dejado por Judas después de su desaparición.

El nombre de Matías significa ‘regalo de Yahveh’, y de hecho, así lo fue para la historia de la primitiva Iglesia. Matías -según nos cuenta el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles– fue elegido de entre las primeras personas que se adhirieron al Señor y acompañaron a los apóstoles. Él siguió los hechos y palabras de Jesús durante el tiempo de su ministerio, y fue capaz de testimoniarlo en su entorno tras la muerte y Resurrección del Maestro.

Matías respondió “sí” cuando la Iglesia en oración sintió que era él quien debía asociarse al grupo de los Doce. Que como Matías, también nosotros permanezcamos disponibles a las necesidades de la Iglesia y de todo el pueblo de Dios.

Del Evangelio de san Juan 15,9-17

En aquel tiempo, dijo Jesús a sus discípulos: “Como el Padre me ha amado, así os he amado yo; permaneced en mi amor. Si guardáis mis mandamientos, permaneceréis en mi amor; lo mismo que yo he guardado los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanezco en su amor. Os he hablado de esto para que mi alegría esté en vosotros, y vuestra alegría llegue a plenitud. Éste es mi mandamiento: que os améis unos a otros como yo os he amado. Nadie tiene amor más grande que el que da la vida por sus amigos. Vosotros sois mis amigos, si hacéis lo que yo os mando. Ya no os llamo siervos, porque el siervo no sabe lo que hace su señor: a vosotros os llamo amigos, porque todo lo que he oído a mi Padre os lo he dado a conocer. No sois vosotros los que me habéis elegido, soy yo quien os he elegido y os he destinado para que vayáis y deis fruto, y vuestro fruto dure. De modo que lo que pidáis al Padre en mi Nombre os lo concederá. Esto es lo que les mando: que os améis unos a otros.”

COMENTARIO ORANTE

La palabra «amigo» produce en nosotros hondas resonancias, con todo tipo de matices. Todos deseamos tener amigos, buenos y grandes amigos, pero la amistad requiere de cultivo y fidelidad; delicadeza, respeto y cuidado. Perseverancia y sensibilidad.

Deseamos tener amigos, muchos y grandes amigos, pero quizás nos es más costoso ser amigos de verdad, de aquellos que se conocen en el tiempo de la prueba.

Impresiona escuchar que Jesús nos llama «sus amigos», y que esa palabra nos la dirige de una manera consciente y directa, no impersonal.

Él nos llama como grupo, pero no como un conjunto de individuos unidos por unas misma convicciones o ideales, sino unidos en Él por la experiencia de un Amor personal y único; por la vivencia de una amistad íntima y personal, que permanece en cada uno de nuestros corazones y sólo en ocasiones especiales sentimos que la podemos narrar.

Ante tanto don de Su parte, queremos corresponder.

Sería una tragedia malbaratar toda la insistencia del amor de Dios hacia nosotros, haciendo oídos sordos a sus solicitudes. Como toda amistad, la nuestra con Él también ha de poder madurar, y el mismo Señor nos indica la manera de hacerlo: «Permaneced en mi amor. Si guardáis mis mandamientos, permaneceréis en mi amor»; y «Éste es mi mandamiento: que os améis unos a otros como Yo os he amado».

Es una amistad verdadera la que podemos vivir con Cristo, pues aunque está repleta de vivencias profundas y personales, nos saca de nosotros mismos y nos hace devenir amigos de Sus amigos.

Que su Espíritu Santo nos haga crecer en el verdadero amor,

y podamos permanecer con todo nuestro ser en Cristo.

Señor Jesús,

mi corazón rebosa de alegría

cuando siento que me llamas tu amigo,

y es algo que pronuncias con toda consciencia,

adelantándote a mis deseos,

ofreciendo Tú mismo y en primera persona

el regalo de tu amistad.

 

Gracias por la intimidad que puedo compartir contigo,

por haberme confiado tu vivencia del Padre;

porque tu amor desvelado

me impulsa a amar -como Tú- a los demás.

 

Amigo Jesús,

Señor de nuestra vida y de nuestra historia,

colma nuestros deseos de fidelidad

y haznos capaces de permanecer en tu Amor.

FEAST OF ST. MATTHIAS, APOSTLE

MOTIVATION

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Matthias the Apostle, who was appointed from the followers of Jesus to complete – in the group of the Twelve – the void left by Judas after his disappearance.

The name Matthias means ‘gift of Yahweh’, and in fact, it was so for the history of the early Church. Matthias, according to the book of the Acts of the Apostles, was chosen from the first people who adhered to the Lord and accompanied the apostles. He followed the deeds and words of Jesus during the time of his ministry, and was able to witness it in his environment after the death and Resurrection of the Master.

Matthias answered “yes” when the Church in prayer felt that it was he who should join the group of the Twelve. Like Matthias, may we also remain available to the needs of the Church and of all the people of God.

From the Gospel of John 15:9-17

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: that you love each other.”

REFLECTION

The word “friend” causes in us deep echoes, with all kinds of tones. We all want to have friends, good and great friends, but friendship requires nurturing and fidelity; delicacy, respect and care, perseverance and sensitivity

We want to have friends, many and great friends, but perhaps it is harder for us to be true friends, those who are known at the time of trial.

It is impressive to hear that Jesus calls us “his friends”, and that this word is addressed to us, not in an impersonal way but in a conscious and direct manner. He calls us as a group, but not as a group of individuals united by the same convictions or ideals, but united in him by the experience of a personal and unique Love; by the experience of a close personal friendship, which remains in each of our hearts and only on special occasions we feel that we can narrate it.

Given such a gift on His part, we want to correspond.

It would be a tragedy to squander all the insistence of God’s love on us, turning a deaf ear to his requests. Like any friendship, our friendship with him must also be able to mature, and the Lord himself tells us how to do it: “Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love”; and “This is my command: that you love one another as I have loved you.”

The friendship we can live with Christ is a true friendship, because although it is full of deep and personal experiences, it takes us out of ourselves and makes us friends of His friends.

May his Holy Spirit make us grow in true love, and may we remain with our whole being in Christ.
